A race between the vineyards where born some of the most famous wines around the world, among the harmonious hills that surround the beauty of Chianti land. Unique landscape that will make the stage at the first edition of Chianti Trail Ultra scheduled from 23rd to 25th March 2018 in the heart of Chianti Classico area, between the provinces of Florence and Siena. A unique experience of its kind combining nature, history, competition and the discovery of the territory along the 73 kilometers of the Ultra Trail, the headquarters is in Radda in Chianti, in the middle of vineyards and olive groves, castles and villas that have fallen in love all over the world of this small flair of Tuscan region.
“Chianti Trail Ultra was born from the idea of organizing a series of events within the historical Chianti area, each of them, sport, tourist or gourmet themed and the discipline of the Ultra Trail seems to have been born specifically for our land: is the type of race that most represents because it combines nature and discovery of the territory”, explains Matteo Matteuzzi of Chianti Live, event organizer. Three trails with departure and arrival in Radda in Chianti: Trail Ultra (73 km positive elevation 2.600 m), Chianti Trail (37 km positive elevation 1.200 m), Short Trail (15 km positive elevation 600m) through an uncontaminated territory rich in history and traditions: “Surely the landscapes are unique in the world: the historic Chianti offers incredible views and trails, albeit rather fleet, there are plenty of technical traits that will severely engage the runners. We have decided to propose three different routes because we want to be first of all an opportunity to discover our territory, to involve both those who want to make a short ride in the midst of the vineyards and the sportsman who wants to test his performance. All this always with a look at the landscape and good wine. The 15 km is a feasible route from all, the 37 km is more performing as length and track, up to 73 km, which puts even the most experienced runners to the test “, Matteuzzi says.
So many symbols of Chantishire wil be touched by the different paths. Starting from Radda in Chianti, the medieval village, the only one with the palace of the “podestà”(medieval municipality) in Chianti area , which rises 650 meters above sea level where you can see the valleys that lead to Siena and the hills are sweet and covered with vineyards. In the trail, the runners will meet Dievole’s farm, one of the most important wineries in the area, the fascinating San Giusto church, then back to the imposing Villa Vistarenni, a Renaissance villa that stands out among the hills. From here begins the ascentwhere technique and training are need to get to the top of San Michele mountain, the highest point in Chianti area. And then the descent towards Volpaia, one of the most famous and characteristic medieval villages, and the return to Radda in Chianti to cut the finish line.
The three-day program for runners will see on Friday March 23 delivery of bib and technical briefing, on Saturday, March 24 from 6 am, the three tracks will be scanned and Sunday 25 March will be the Ultra Wine: at Chianti Classico House, in Radda in Chianti, an ancient Franciscan monastery which has been completely restored and is now the House of Chianti Classico Wine Consortium, participants will have the opportunity to take a guided tours of the “Sensory Museum of Chianti Classico Wine” and a full immersion in discovering the wines of Chianti Classico with special events “How to become Sommelier in 30 minutes”.
